Beginning a Centering Prayer Practice - 1
What is Centering Prayer?
In its simplest definition, centering prayer is a Christian form of meditation, and it's a form of meditation that is ancient in the Christian community's tradition. It goes all the way back almost to the time of Christ. And what it comes down to, if you had to just water it all the way down, it comes to a definition of: How do we find the quiet in our heart?
How do we find a peaceful way to exist in this world? Not only at this time in history, but at any time in history. This has been the practice of many, many Christians. The attempt to quiet our hearts is an attempt to find what is at the core of our heart. And at the core of our heart, of course, is Christ. That's what Christians believe.
Being able to let go of all of the thoughts that run through your mind, the tension, the anxiety that you often have to live with, this is for the purpose of being able to listen to the one voice that is essential for us to listen to as we attempt to follow Christ, in a contemporary world that has a lot of heartache and in the context of your own life. Which, like any life, has its ups and its downs, and its troubles and its joys. Centering prayer is a way that you can really reach to that quiet.
And here on Contemplative Underground our spiritual guides: Mother Rita Kendagor, Father David Stock, and myself help guide you into how to learn to practice centering prayer, this form of meditation, and allow you to fly in a way that is deeply spiritual and very meaningful.
